Expo ‘De derde persoon’ in café Marnix

EDE – ‘De derde persoon’ is de titel van de expositie van Esther en Jop de Vries in Grandcafé Marnix. Deze is te bezichtigen van maandag tot en met zaterdag tussen 10.00 en 18.30 uur, plus vrijdagavond koopavond tot 22.00 uur. Zondag is het café gesloten.

Grand Café Marnix is gevestigd in het voormalig hoofdgebouw van het Marnix College te Ede. Elke twee maanden vindt er bij Grand Café Marnix een wisselende expositie plaats. In samenwerking met de Edese kunstenaar Marcel Verbrugge krijgen kunstenaars de mogelijkheid om werk te exposeren. De expositie ‘de derde persoon’ is tot en met eind februari. Innerlijke portretten zo worden ze genoemd.

De geschilderde portretten van Esther de Vries en Jop Horst. Twee totaal verschillende type kunstenaars. Wat een ander een perfect portret vindt werd voor Esther de Vries steeds meer verstarring, voelde ze zich steeds meer opgesloten binnen de grenzen van de wensen van het publiek. Daarom schildert ze samen met Jop Horst die als geen ander materialen tot speeltuig kan laten leven. Want hóe laat je die lijn los, die daar toch hoort, bij de neus, de lippen. Gewoon een kleur er dwars doorheen, vegen, strijken en niet denken, ó maar dat is fout, want niets is fout. En gek, een foute lijn of veeg gaat ergens heen, een richting, een portret met een rare, een droevige, een gemene, een spottende, een lelijke of een gullachende smoel.

De derde persoon ontstaat, de persoon die op de rand van een tafel zit, vervaagt en weer verschijnt en arrogant zijn nagels vijlt, of onuitstaanbaar charmant een haarlok naar achteren strijkt. En steeds is er het gevaar van sturen, herhalen, veiligheid, als je iets doet volgens een maniertje, als je bang bent kapot te maken wat ontstaat. Zodat soms ruwweg over een portret heen wordt geschilderd. Dan verdwijnt een mooi maniertjesportret achter nieuwe streken. Grof, onverbiddelijk, het moet ruwer, puurder, echter. En net zolang wordt er overheen geschilderd, terwijl de man op de rand van de tafel achteloos zijn dunne sigaretten rookt en kijkt, tot het er is, en derde persoon. Hij blaast met getuite lippen rook, verwarring, mist en onduidelijkheid, hij eist compromisloos gezwoeg.
